What we repair on an Apple Watch
The faults that actually come through the door, in roughly the order we see them:
- cracked or shattered front crystal, with or without the display still working
- a display lifting away at one edge, which is nearly always the battery swelling beneath it
- battery life that has collapsed to part of a day
- a watch that will not charge, or will not stay on the charger
- a digital crown that will not turn, or grinds, usually from sweat and dust
- touch that works in some areas of the screen and not others
- liquid ingress after swimming, showers or the gym
If yours is not on this list, book it anyway with the symptom described. The diagnosis is free and we would rather tell you it is not repairable than have you wonder.
The one to act on quickly
If the screen is lifting at an edge, or there is a gap you can see light through, or the watch has started feeling like it sits proud of the case, that is a swelling battery and not a loose screen. Stop wearing it and stop charging it.
A swelling lithium cell keeps swelling. Left alone it pushes the display assembly out until the panel cracks, which turns a battery replacement into a battery and display replacement, and a swollen cell is a fire risk while it is strapped to your wrist. This is the one Apple Watch fault where a week genuinely matters.
Why a cracked watch screen costs what it does
On a phone, the glass and the display are one bonded part, and people are used to that. On an Apple Watch the assembly is smaller, more tightly packed, and includes the touch layer and, on most models, the force-touch gasket, all in a component that has to seal against water.
The practical consequence is that there is no cheap version of this repair: a cracked crystal means replacing the display assembly. It is also why the price depends so heavily on which watch you have. A 38mm Series 3 and a 49mm Ultra are not comparable jobs, and averaging them into one published figure would mislead everyone who owns either.
Before you book
Note which watch you have: Settings, General, About on the watch itself gives the model and case size, or the Watch app on your iPhone shows the same. It is the first thing we will ask, and it is what decides the price.
Make sure the watch is backed up through its paired iPhone, and if the display is unusable, everything from your Health and activity history is already on the phone rather than only on the watch. Book with the symptom described and we will collect it free of charge, along with the phone if that also needs looking at. Why is there no price list for Apple Watch repairs?
Because we price what we can price honestly. Apple Watch parts vary sharply by generation, size and case material, and the same cracked screen is a very different job on a Series 3 from a Series 9 or an Ultra. Rather than publish a figure that would be wrong for most people, we diagnose the watch free of charge and give you the price for yours.
My watch screen is lifting at one edge. Is that a screen problem?
Usually not: it is the battery underneath swelling and pushing the display out of the case. Stop wearing it and stop charging it, and book it in. A swollen lithium battery is a genuine hazard and the pressure will eventually crack the display, turning a battery job into a battery and screen job.
Can you replace just the glass on an Apple Watch?
On most models, no. The glass, the OLED panel and the touch layer are bonded into one assembly, and separating them reliably is not something we would promise. That means a cracked screen is a display assembly replacement, which is also why the price depends so much on which watch you have.
Does the watch lose its water resistance after a repair?
Yes, to a degree. Opening the case breaks the original factory seal, and while we reseal what we open, a repaired watch should not be treated as safe for swimming or diving at its original rating. If you swim with it, tell us at booking so we can talk about that specifically.
My watch will not charge or keeps dropping off the charger.
Try a different charging puck and a different plug first, and check the back of the watch and the puck for debris or a sticker left behind. If it still will not hold the connection, it is worth looking at: the charging coil, the battery and the board are all candidates, and which one it is changes the repair.
Do you repair the band or the case scratches?
Bands are a part you can replace yourself for far less than any workshop would charge, so we will tell you that rather than sell you the work. Scratches in the case or the screen surface cannot be polished out of a bonded display; that is a display replacement, and we will be straight with you about whether it is worth it.
