On current iPhones the front glass and the display panel are bonded into one part, so a crack is fixed by replacing the whole screen assembly rather than the glass on its own. The price is the same whether the display underneath still works or not.

Signs the display itself is damaged, not only the glass:

• black, purple or green spots that spread like ink
• vertical or horizontal lines, or a green line down one side
• flickering, or brightness that jumps on its own
• areas that ignore touch, or taps registering where you did not touch

A damaged OLED panel can get worse quickly, and loose glass cuts. Until it is repaired, a strip of clear tape over the cracks keeps shards in place.

The iPhone 7, 8, XR, 11 and the SE models use LCD screens. The iPhone X, XS, 11 Pro and every model from the iPhone 12 series on, apart from the SE, use OLED, which costs more to replace; the larger and newer the panel, the higher the price.
