MacBook is not one machine. A 13-inch MacBook Air from 2015, a 16-inch MacBook Pro from 2019 and an M-series Air share a name and almost no parts. The display, battery, keyboard and port assemblies differ by generation, and so does the price and the time the repair takes.

The identifier we need is on the machine itself: open Apple menu › About This Mac, or read the small print along the bottom of the underside, where the model number begins with an A. Tell us that number when you book and the price we quote is the price for your machine, not a range.

On MacBooks with a T2 security chip and on every Apple Silicon model, storage is soldered to the logic board and encrypted to it. That has two consequences worth knowing before you book. First, your data cannot be moved to another machine by swapping a drive: if the board is dead, recovery is a board-level job and is never guaranteed. Second, some components, including Touch ID, are paired to the board, so a repair that would have been a simple part swap on an older machine may not be.

We tell you which of these applies to your machine at diagnosis. If a repair cannot be done properly on your model we say so rather than attempting it.

Two faults account for a large share of the MacBooks we see. The butterfly keyboards fitted between 2016 and 2019 fail in a recognisable way: one key repeats, sticks, or stops registering, usually after dust works under the mechanism. On those models the keyboard is riveted into the top case, so a proper repair replaces the assembly rather than a single key.

The other is a swollen battery. If your trackpad has started clicking oddly, the case rocks on the desk, or the lid no longer closes flush, stop using the machine and stop charging it. A swollen lithium pack is a fire and injury risk, not a cosmetic problem. Bring it in or ask for collection and we will handle it accordingly.

Fan and thermal complaints arrive here more often than the design alone would explain. Fine dust gets into the intake, packs against the heatsink fins, and the machine throttles to stay within temperature. The symptom owners report is a slow Mac; the cause is mechanical. A clean and fresh thermal paste often restores normal performance, and it is worth ruling out before anyone talks about a board repair or a new machine.

Most MacBook repairs, including screens, batteries, keyboards and ports, do not touch your data. We still ask you to take a Time Machine or iCloud backup first if the machine still turns on, because no repair is risk-free and a current backup costs you nothing.

If it will not turn on, do not worry about it: say so when you book, and preserving what is on the drive becomes part of the diagnosis rather than something you have to solve first.
