Is it the screen? The faults we see most
A MacBook display can fail without ever being dropped. The common patterns:
- a crack from closing the lid on an earbud, a pen or a charging cable left on the keyboard
- vertical lines, or a band of colour down one side of the panel
- uneven light along the bottom edge, or a backlight that only works with the lid part-way open, known on some 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro models as "stage light"
- patches where the anti-reflective coating has worn or peeled, which looks like a stain that will not clean off
- a black screen with the keyboard backlight and fans clearly running
The last two are worth describing when you book. Coating wear is a cosmetic fault that only a new display assembly fixes; a black screen may not be the display at all.
Why a MacBook screen is priced as a whole lid
On Retina MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models the display is not a panel that lifts out of a frame. The glass, the panel, the hinge area and usually the aluminium lid are supplied as one display assembly, with the cables and antennas routed through it. Replacing it means opening the base, disconnecting the display and the parts beneath it, and fitting the new assembly.
That is why the price for a MacBook screen tracks the model and screen size rather than the size of the crack, and why the table above varies so widely between a 13-inch Air and a 16-inch Pro.
A one-minute check before you book
If the screen is dark or lined, connect the MacBook to a TV or external monitor with a USB-C or HDMI adapter. A clean picture on the external screen points to the display or its cable. No picture anywhere points further in, to the graphics or the logic board, which is a diagnosis rather than a screen replacement. If the glass is cracked, close the lid gently and avoid pressing on it: shards can scratch the keyboard and a flexing panel can crack further.
What happens after you book
We confirm collection, check the MacBook before anything is opened, fit the display and test it for dead pixels, backlight and True Tone before it comes back. Can you replace just the glass on a MacBook screen?
Not on a Retina MacBook. The glass, the panel and on most models the lid itself are made as one display assembly, so a crack is repaired by replacing that assembly. It is the reason a MacBook screen costs more than the size of the crack suggests.
The screen is black but the MacBook seems to be on. Is it the display?
Sometimes. It can also be the display cable, the backlight circuit or the logic board. Plug it into an external monitor before you book: if the picture appears there, the fault is on the display side. Either way we diagnose it free of charge before quoting.
Will True Tone and the brightness sensor still work?
They should. On models where True Tone depends on the original ambient light sensor, it has to be carried over during the repair, and we check it before the MacBook goes back to you. If a repair on your model affects it, we tell you.
Is my data touched during a screen replacement?
No. The storage is not opened or erased for a display repair. A current Time Machine or iCloud backup is still sensible before handing over any computer.
