Signs the battery is the problem
- macOS shows Service Recommended under Battery Health
- the MacBook dies at 20% or 30%, or only runs when plugged in
- a full charge now lasts a fraction of what it did
- the percentage jumps, or the MacBook shuts down under load and restarts on the charger
- the case no longer sits flat, the trackpad stiffens, or the lid will not close fully
Short battery life is not always the battery. A process stuck at full CPU drains any battery fast. If Battery Health reads Normal, check Activity Monitor before booking, or book a free diagnosis and we check for you.
A swollen battery is a safety issue
Lithium cells that swell are failing, and a swollen pack under a trackpad is a fire risk rather than an inconvenience. Do not keep charging it, do not press the case back down, and do not try to lift the pack out yourself. Book the replacement, say the battery is swollen, and we will treat it accordingly. Once removed, a swollen battery is disposed of properly rather than binned.
Why battery prices differ between models
On older MacBooks the battery is screwed in and comes out in minutes. On most Retina and Apple Silicon models it is glued into the case in several cells, and removing it safely takes time and care, which is reflected in the price. On some models the battery is supplied together with the top case and keyboard. The table above shows the price for each model we have priced; if yours is marked "Diagnosis required", we confirm the price free of charge before starting.
Getting the most from the new battery
Leave Optimized Battery Charging switched on, avoid leaving the MacBook on a hot car seat or in direct sun, and do not worry about topping up: modern MacBook batteries are happiest between about 20% and 80% and do not need to be drained regularly. Heat is the thing that ages them fastest.

How do I know my MacBook battery needs replacing?
Open System Settings, then Battery, then the information button next to Battery Health. A condition of Service Recommended, a maximum capacity well below 80%, or a cycle count near 1,000 on a recent model all point to a worn battery.
My trackpad is hard to click and the case is lifting. What should I do?
Stop using and charging the MacBook. That is the classic sign of a swollen battery pushing up from below. Book a battery replacement and mention the swelling, so it is handled as a priority.
Will I lose my files?
No. A battery replacement does not open or erase the storage. Take a backup first if the MacBook still runs, as you would before any repair.
Why does the new battery show a lower percentage for the first few days?
macOS learns a new battery over its first few charge cycles. Let it run down and charge fully a couple of times and the readings settle.
