Work out which camera has failed
Open the Camera app and step through the zoom buttons. Each rear lens is a separate physical camera: 0.5x is the ultra-wide, 1x the main camera, and the telephoto setting on Pro models a third. Then flip to the front camera. A fault that shows at one setting and not the others tells you which module it is, and that decides which part the repair needs.
- a black viewfinder on one setting only: that camera, or its connector
- black on every setting, front and back: more likely software or the board
- blur that will not focus, near or far: the focus mechanism of that camera
- a picture that wobbles, often with a buzz or click from the camera: the stabilisation
- haze, flare or dark specks in the same place in every photo: the lens cover, or dust behind it
Three things to try before booking
Wipe the lens, then take the case off: a case that overlaps the edge of the lens, a cracked protector over the camera, or a magnetic mount close to it can each upset focus and stabilisation. Restart the phone. Then open the camera inside another app, such as FaceTime or WhatsApp. If it works there and not in Camera, the hardware is fine.
The shaking, buzzing camera
The main camera on recent iPhones floats on a stabilisation mechanism that moves the lens or the sensor to cancel out hand shake. A hard drop can knock it loose, and so can long exposure to strong vibration: Apple itself warns that mounting an iPhone on a high-powered motorcycle can degrade the camera over time. The result is a picture that will not hold still and a module that buzzes whenever the Camera app is open. It does not settle down on its own, and the repair is a replacement camera module.
Cracked lens glass is not a camera fault
The small glass window over each rear camera is a cover, separate from the camera beneath it. If it has cracked and your photos are still sharp, the camera has survived and the repair is the cover. Do not leave it, though: fragments and dust work through the crack into the camera, and at that point the module needs replacing too. A strip of clear tape over the cover keeps it sealed until then. Front camera and Face ID
On iPhones with Face ID, the front camera sits alongside the infrared sensors Face ID depends on, and those sensors are paired to the phone by Apple. A front camera fault is therefore diagnosed before anything is replaced, and we tell you what the repair involves for Face ID on your model along with its price. If Face ID had already stopped working, say so when you book.
The camera notice in iOS
From the iPhone 12 on, iOS keeps a parts and service history under Settings, General, About, and can show a notice for a camera it cannot verify as a genuine Apple part. The camera still works. If that notice matters to you, ask us which camera your repair uses before you book.

My camera shows a black screen. Is it broken?
Not necessarily. If only one camera is black and the others work, it is that camera or its connector. If every camera is black, including the front one, start with a restart and an iOS update, and try the camera inside another app: that pattern points to software or the board more often than to the cameras themselves.
Can you replace only the camera lens glass?
When the cover is cracked and the camera behind it still takes sharp photos, that is the repair to ask for, and it is a smaller job than a camera. Say it is the lens cover when you book and we check the camera behind it before quoting.
Why does the price depend on which camera has failed?
Because they are separate parts. The main camera, the ultra-wide, the telephoto on Pro models and the front camera are each their own module at their own price, and a Pro Max main camera is not the part a standard model takes. That is why we ask which zoom setting shows the fault.
Will my photos be affected by a camera repair?
No. Photos are in the phone's storage, which a camera repair does not touch. Back up first anyway, as before any repair.
My iPhone rattles when I shake it. Is the camera faulty?
A faint rattle with the Camera app closed can be normal: the stabilised lens is free to move when it is not powered. It is a fault when the picture itself shakes, or the camera buzzes while the app is open. That does not improve with time.
