Check the battery in two minutes
Windows keeps a record of how much charge the battery held when it was new and how much it holds now. To read it:
- Right-click the Start button and open Terminal, PowerShell or Command Prompt.
- Type
powercfg /batteryreportand press Enter. - Open the battery-report.html file at the location it prints.
Compare Design Capacity with Full Charge Capacity. A battery that now fills to well under two thirds of its design figure is worn, and the report lists the cycle count beside it on most laptops. Dell, HP and Lenovo also put a battery check in their own support apps and in the BIOS, which says the same thing in plainer words.
When it is not the battery
Several faults look like a dead battery and are cheaper to fix, or cost nothing at all:
- Stuck at 60% or 80% and reading "plugged in, not charging": usually a charge limit switched on in the maker's own app, such as Lenovo Vantage, MyASUS or Dell Power Manager. It is a setting that protects the battery, not a fault.
- Charging that depends on how the cable is held: the charging socket or the cable, not the battery.
- A warning about a slow or unrecognised charger: an adapter of the wrong wattage, or a failing one.
- A healthy battery report but poor runtime: something running in the background, or a laptop running hot because its fans are choked with dust.
If the report says the battery is healthy, book a free diagnosis rather than a battery. Paying for a part the laptop did not need helps nobody.
Matching the right battery
Laptop batteries are not interchangeable, even within one model line. The same laptop is often sold with two or three different packs, a smaller and a larger capacity, with different connectors or mounting points. The reliable identifier is the part number printed on the battery itself, with the voltage and the capacity in watt-hours beside it, and that is what a replacement is matched against.
Age matters as well. Lithium cells deteriorate on a shelf, so for a laptop that went out of production years ago, a pack sold as new may already have lost capacity. For older machines we tell you what is realistically available, and when a replacement is not worth the money we say so.
If the case is bulging
A trackpad that has risen or stopped clicking, a base panel that bows outward, or a laptop that rocks on a flat desk are the signs of a battery swelling inside the case. Unplug it, shut it down and stop using it. Do not press the case flat, and do not prise at the pack or puncture it. Carry it on its own rather than squeezed into a full bag, and tell us it is swollen when you book so it is collected and handled as one.
Making the new battery last
Heat ages a laptop battery faster than use does. A machine left running on a bed, on a car seat or on a sunny windowsill cooks its pack. If yours spends its life on a desk plugged in, switch on the charge limit in the maker's app so it holds at around 80% instead of sitting full. And a laptop whose fans are clogged runs a new battery hot from the first day, so if yours is loud or hot, mention it when you book.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to common questions.
How do I get a price for my laptop battery?
Book with the brand and model number, and the battery part number if you can read it from the battery report or the pack. Where we publish a price for your model it is shown during booking. Where we do not, we check the laptop free of charge at our workshop and confirm the required repair and applicable price.
Can I just keep using the laptop on the charger?
With a worn battery, yes: it runs on mains power, though it switches off the moment the plug is knocked and takes unsaved work with it. With a swollen battery, no. Stop using it and do not charge it.
How long should a laptop battery last?
Most are rated for several hundred full charge cycles, which for typical use is around two to four years before the drop in runtime becomes obvious. Heat, and years spent at 100% on the charger, both shorten that.
Will I lose my files?
No. Replacing the battery does not touch the drive. On a few models the clock and some BIOS settings reset when the battery is disconnected, which takes a minute to put right.
Should I buy a battery online and fit it myself?
On an older laptop with a clip-in pack it is reasonable, provided the part number matches exactly. On most current laptops the battery is inside the case, joined to the board by a fragile cable and sometimes glued in, and the cheapest packs sold online are often old stock or built without proper protection circuitry. The battery is the one laptop part that can catch fire when it is wrong.
