Is it the screen, or something behind it?
Not every dark or flickering display needs a new panel, and a few quick checks tell most of the story before anyone opens the laptop:
- Connect an external monitor or a TV. A clean picture there means the laptop is fine and the fault is in the lid: the panel, its cable or the hinge area.
- Shine a phone torch at the dark screen from an angle. A faint image you can just make out means the panel is drawing a picture with no backlight behind it.
- Move the lid slowly through its travel. A picture that cuts in and out with the angle points at the display cable where it passes through the hinge, not at the panel.
- No picture on the laptop or on an external monitor points away from the screen entirely, towards the graphics or the board.
Cracks, an ink-like black patch spreading from one point, and coloured vertical lines that stay put when you move the lid are the panel itself. Those do not recover, and they tend to spread.
What decides the price of a laptop screen
Two laptops with the same screen size can take panels at very different prices. What moves it:
- size and resolution, from 1366x768 through Full HD to QHD and 4K
- panel type: TN, IPS or OLED, which is the colour and viewing angle you look at every day
- refresh rate: 60 Hz on most laptops, 120 or 144 Hz and above on gaming models
- touch or non-touch, and whether the glass is bonded to the panel
- the connector and where the mounting brackets sit, which decide whether a panel fits at all

Check the hinges before a new screen goes in
A surprising number of cracked laptop screens were broken by the laptop itself. When a hinge seizes, or its mount inside the lid breaks away, opening the lid twists the panel until it cracks, usually from a bottom corner. Fit a new panel to that lid and it cracks the same way within weeks.
If your lid has become stiff, creaks, or the bezel has started to separate near a hinge, say so when you book. Where a hinge or its mount is the cause, we tell you what it involves and what it costs together with the screen, so the same panel is not paid for twice.
Until it is repaired
Do not press on a cracked panel, and do not close the lid on anything lying on the keyboard: the crack spreads under pressure, and on a touch model broken glass can start registering touches of its own. A cracked screen that still shows a picture is safe to keep using gently. If the picture is unusable, an external monitor keeps you working and lets you take a backup first.
What happens after you book
We collect the laptop free of charge, or you drop it off at the workshop in Deira. The panel is identified against the machine itself rather than the model name, fitted, and the picture tested before the laptop comes back to you free. Each stage appears on repair tracking. How do I get a price for my laptop screen?
Book with the brand and the model number printed on the underside of the laptop. Where we publish a price for your model it is shown during booking. Where we do not, we inspect the laptop free of charge at our workshop, identify the exact panel it takes, and confirm the required repair and applicable price.
Can I keep using the laptop with an external monitor until it is repaired?
Usually, yes. If the laptop itself still runs, a monitor or TV on the HDMI or USB-C port will show the picture, and Windows key with P switches the output. It is also the easiest way to take a backup before you send the laptop in.
Is my data affected by a screen replacement?
No. The screen is a separate part from the drive, and replacing it does not open, erase or reinstall anything. A backup before any repair is still sensible.
Can a touchscreen laptop be repaired?
Yes, but it is often a different part. On many touch and 2-in-1 models the glass, the touch layer and the panel are bonded into one assembly, and on some the whole lid is supplied as a unit. That is why touch models are identified exactly before a price is given.
Can you fit a better screen than the one it came with?
Sometimes. A higher-resolution or IPS panel only works if the laptop's display cable and board support it, and many budget models were built with a cable that does not. Ask when you book: we check what your model accepts before quoting, and by default we match the original specification.
